The coin is the first in a five-part series on “Climate Zones of the Earth”, which will conclude with a “Polar Zone” coin in 2021. The innovative coin consists of an outer ring, an inner circle and a translucent, mintable polymer ring between the inner and outer sections.

The coin, which was designed by the artist Stefanie Radtke, shows a parrot, which symbolises tropical biodiversity. The bird’s-eye view conveys a sense of immersion in the tropical foliage. These realistic visual elements from the rainforest are an ideal way to depict the tropical zone.

Michael Meister presented a first minting of the commemorative coin to the honorary president of the World Money Fair, Albert Beck, the coin’s designer, Stefanie Radtke, and the governor of the South African Reserve Bank, Lesetja Kganyago. Mr Kganyago was representing South Africa, this year’s guest of honour at the World Money Fair.

A total of 2.3 million Tropical Zone coins will be minted, of which 300,000 pieces will be of proof quality for collectors. The issue date is 27 April 2017, when the coins will be placed in circulation in brilliant uncirculated quality at the face value of five euros via the branches of the Deutsche Bundesbank. The coins will be available for purchase at these branches and also at many commercial banks.
