Effective Financial Market Regulation after Pittsburgh – Achievements and Challenges

On 19-20 May 2010, Federal Minister of Finance Wolfgang Schäuble will host an international conference on financial market regulation in Berlin. The focus will be on regulatory and supervisory reform. Complementing the preparations for the Toronto G20 Summit in June, the conference aims to deepen and broaden the debate on selected issues.
The two-day event will involve senior representatives from finance ministries, central banks, regulatory authorities, international financial institutions, and academia. In addition to Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and Wolfgang Schäuble, French Minister of Finance Christine Lagarde, the President of the Bundesbank Axel Weber, EU Commissioner for Internal Market Michel Barnier, the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Thomas Mirow, Secretary General of the OECD [Glossar] Angel Gurría, and the Canadian Deputy Minister of Finance Tiff Macklem will participate in the event.
Organised in two panels, the discussion aims at identifying areas where further efforts will be needed to ensure that the financial system stabilises and performs its functions for the real economy. The participants will discuss i.a. how the integrity and functioning of capital markets could be improved; how systemically important financial institutions should be dealt with; and how the financial sector could contribute to the cost of crisis.
