    G7 meeting in Chantilly: focus on stablecoins and international tax policy

    At their meeting in Chantilly (France) on 17 and 18 July, the G7 finance ministers and central bank governors discussed the risks associated with stablecoins. They reiterated the importance of a fair international tax system and, for the first time, agreed on the introduction of a global minimum effective corporate tax as an explicit aim.

    G20 breakthrough on minimum tax

    At the G20 meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors in Fukuoka (Japan) on 8 and 9 June 2019, German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz expressed his strong support for the introduction of a global minimum tax for companies. His initiative was supported by all the other G20 members. The aim is to prevent large corporations from avoiding their tax responsibilities. An agreement on this is to be concluded in 2020.

    Germany contributes to global financial stability

    During a recent visit to Washington, D.C., State Secretary Wolfgang Schmidt confirmed German financial support for two thematic technical assistance funds at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The funds help IMF member countries to improve their statistics systems and to make their financial markets more resilient against crises.

    German-Chinese financial dialogue on 16–18 January 2019

    The most recent German-Chinese financial dialogue was held in Beijing on 18 January 2019. Its main objective was to further deepen cooperation between Germany and China in the area of finance. German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz conducted talks with Chinese government representatives, researchers and the central bank. The two countries concluded specific agreements to improve mutual market access.

    German government promoting private-sector development in Africa

    On 30 October 2018, the heads of state and government of the African countries participating in the Compact with Africa attended a high-level conference hosted in Berlin by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Olaf Scholz, who is advancing the initiative in cooperation with the other G20 finance ministers, welcomed the fact that German businesses are making a stronger commitment to Africa.
